她在前人基础上，苦心钻研黄梅戏的演唱技艺，组建戏班，将黄梅采茶小戏，推进成高台大戏，并一路唱到京城。她是清乾隆年间鄂赣皖三省黄梅戏代表人物，也是黄梅戏从民间小戏发展成高台大戏的奠基人，乾隆皇帝曾御赐为“黄梅名伶”，堪称一代宗师。
