国家地理迷你剧《The Long Road Home》是根据Martha Raddatz所著的畅销书改篇，背景在伊拉克战争，讲述在2004年4月4日一支由德州胡德堡而来的美国陆军第1骑兵师，在巴格达萨德尔城里遭到猛烈伏击，并造成8人阵亡的「黑色星期日/Black Sunday」军事事件。这剧会聚焦在身陷现场的士兵，以及于德州等待了48小时消息，甚至已有最坏打算的家人。

本剧以吉川英治的《宫本武藏》做为原作，原作原本只写到岩流岛决斗而已，而本剧则是在后半部份衍生出岩流岛以后的故事。在岩流岛决斗的那一集，用了三十台摄影机，尝试制作出特殊的效果。，又请来颜尼欧・莫利克奈作音乐，喧腾一时，极有话题性。但是开演之后，收视率每况愈下，到后来可说欲振乏力。包括女主角米仓凉子等演员与编剧镰田敏夫等人，将整出戏包装得像是偶像剧一般，而这也正是前一出大河剧“利家与松”被批评诟病的部份所在。 本剧在播出期间也制造出一些负面的新闻：在第一集里的强盗袭击场面被认为有抄袭黑泽明导演的电影“七武士”之嫌，因此在全剧播毕之后，由黑泽制作公司提出著作权遭侵害的告诉，不过黑泽公司败诉。其次是剧中角色吉野太夫脱衣向宫本武藏献身，这一幕遭到部分艺文界人士抗议，认为身为文化人的吉野太夫不该被演成如此不堪的女性。此外在演员的方面，男主角市川新之助被爆出与一名女歌手有私生女的丑闻，并且又和女主角米仓凉子因戏结缘相恋，也着实热闹了一阵子。
