制作团队表示他们在重新阅读《哈利·波特与混血王子》时产生了一些好奇和启发，原著小说里有一段是讲述邓不利多教授带着哈利·波特，一起观看来自家庭小精灵哈佳的回忆。回忆中出现了花奇葩在波金与伯克氏店内，向汤姆瑞斗炫耀赫夫帕夫的金杯，以及史莱哲林的小金匣的片段，但之后邓不利多却告诉哈利，花奇葩在这段记忆的2天后就惨遭杀害，于是这部自制电影就刚好是从这个点延伸出去的拓展剧情。
早在2016年时就由独立制片工作室「Tryangle Films」筹划拍摄，靠着集资网站来募款筹措资金，虽然一度被拥有《哈利波特》系列版权的片商华纳兄弟以侵犯权为由要求下架，但经过制作团队多次的沟通和协商后，华纳终于确定全面放行啦！
