《家有儿女》采用重组家庭作为故事展开的平台。主人公夏东海曾跟随前妻到美国陪读工作，离婚后带着7岁的儿子夏雨归国发展，并与在国内长大的女儿夏雪团聚，后与某大医院的护士长刘梅结婚，刘梅也曾离异，并带有一子叫刘星。本剧的主要故事就发生在这个特殊家庭中，夏东海和刘梅的共同特点都是富有爱心，关心孩子的成长，期望“整合”两人的爱心和智慧，培养出快乐生活的下一代。
