在八十年代，香港经营当铺的江苏和在广州当女工的董知书是典型的中港婚姻。二人婚后，仍然相隔两地各自生活，知书先后为江苏诞下大女儿江海潮及小女儿江海澜，知书对没有生下儿子而内疚，但一双女儿生得聪明伶俐，标致可人，总能令大男人的江苏展露笑容，知书简直当一双女儿是心中瑰宝。经多年的申请，知书和两名女儿终获得来港的单程证。就在知书欢天喜地的带着分别五岁及三岁的女儿到深圳火车站，准备来港定居之时，却遇上贼人抢手袋，知书极度无助之际，幸得当时在深圳的香港过气古惑仔崔志文见义勇为，挺身帮忙，二人追贼而去，留下海潮照顾海澜。偏偏这时竟有人乘乱将海澜拐走，姐姐海潮本来是可以大声叫「救命」的，但在电光火石间，海潮竟然没有作声，就这样眼巴巴让海澜被带走了！知书只有带海潮来港定居，每年上大陆寻小女儿，但海澜像是人间蒸发般无法寻回，令知书的心上有一片挥之不去的阴霾，经常发恶梦。海潮长大后，亦有内咎感，总觉得是自己的责任令妹妹失踪！匆匆二十载过去，当日被拐走的海澜，辗转被一对国内的医生夫妇所收养，且养育成人！
该片通过“吉祥宝宝”成长故事中的一个个幽默、积极向上的小片段，巧妙地把东莞800多年的饮食文化融入到动画片内，塑造了一个活泼可爱、诚实善良、诙谐幽默的“吉祥宝宝”形象。故事以一个纯真可爱的小孩子的角度，挖掘日常生活中的奇闻趣事。
